![]() If this is your case, here are a few places you can check: However, a lot of users have complained about having to add up to four or more quarts per month. General Motors states that your Chevy Equinox should run less than one quart of oil within 2,000 miles. This is one of the more common problems encountered in the Chevy Equinox that runs on the four-cylinder engine. A way to prevent this is to change your oil regularly and ensure it’s always at the recommended level. If the tensioners are pushed out a little bit, then the chain is definitely stretched. You’ll need to take the front part of the engine apart to access the timing chain. It is one of the most common Chevrolet Equinox problems that is also difficult to diagnose. This normally means that you have a timing belt that is worn out or stretched. Other common signs that will indicate there is a problem with the timing chain in your Chevrolet Equinox is if you get an Engine Position Performance code or a Camshaft Position Performance code. The car’s computer will then think that something is wrong and bring up a Check Engine light. If it’s stretched, it will distort this process and affect the timing. If the timing chain works properly, the valves will open and close just in time. To make sure they open and close at the right time, a timing chain is used to connect the camshaft to the crankshaft to ensure the two are rotating in synchrony. The intake and exhaust valves are controlled by the camshaft. ![]() This expels the burnt gases through the exhaust valve. The downward push then causes the crankshaft to rotate, pushing the piston back up. The combustion process releases gases that push the piston down the cylinder. Once inside, the mixture burns to release energy. A mixture of air and fuel get into the cylinder through the intake valve. Timing Chain in V6 EngineĪ typical combustion engine consists of a fixed cylinder(s) and a moving piston(s). I'm seeing forum strings all over the web on exactly this issue and GM avoiding all responsibility.Save Up to 50% Off Chevy Equinox Auto Parts and More Common Chevrolet Equinox Problems 1. Just need proof of the work having been completed which we have. The law is very clear that oil changes do not require work by the manufacturer or manufacturers parts such as ACDelco. They claim the oil consumption issue is not tied to the timing issue in any way, totally unrelated and no help for me. I was literally enroute to the dealership for the 1000 mile check when the timing system skipped and the engine died. It had no problem since I purchased it causing me to take to a dealership maintenance shop until about 2 months ago when it had very low oil. Most notable was the balance chain replacement still under warranty. Brother had some work done by a Chevy dealer where he lived and that appears in their records. Oil changes were done routinely at Jiffy Lube and I have those records. Oil changes done by Jiffy Lube on regular basis. Vehicle was then bought by the employee that drove it for that time (my brother) and driven by his daughter to high school and back. Maintained by their fleet department through that time. Vehicle was a company car for a large high profile corporation for the first 3 years and about 36K. Has anyone gotten any resolution from GM on this situation? Any guidance on how to be effective in pushing on GM? I've started a claim with GM/Chevy but the dealer advises GM will drag their feet on it then tell me they will not help. This is clearly and vehicle design issue. The chevy dealer's maintenance manager says GM will not help in any way on this. It should never happen on a vehicle with just 68K miles. This screams of a design or manufacturing defect. I've seen a good number of reports of this on this forum and elsewhere on the web. There is no excuse for a timing chain system to fail at this low mileage. It appears numerous valves are bent and could be damage to some of the piston heads, they have not torn into it that far. Towed to Chevy dealer who opened up the engine and found all the timing chain guides are destroyed, the chain is stretched, and it skipped teeth. The engine just spun down to a halt while driving a city speed 2 days ago.
